4500 Miles from Delhi, 8 Colston Avenue, Bristol, BS1 4ST, 4500miles.co.uk, 01179292224, 3rd Nov 11

This is certainly one serious Indian Restaurant, spacious, inviting, with seating areas that seem to go on forever, timber floors, giving a colonial feel, dark woods, deep reds and creams giving a sumptuous feel and one of opulence with red brick walls, beautifully set out tables and an excellent attentive service. For some reason the fire alarms kept going off which was a shame but then probably just a glitch on the night.

It seemed really busy for a Thursday night, and we were seated quite a way back next to a table of 26 which was a little worrying as we immediately thought that the service time would be affected, but not at all, drinks arrived quickly as did the poppadoms, and although on first look it seemed that they were frugal with only two chutneys, they were absolutely delightful, well flavoured and just the right kick.

Starters

  • Chicken Pakora     Breast fillets of chicken coated in cumin and coriander, tomatoes, mint and spring onions, creating an extraordinary play of tastes. absolutely delicious.
  • Chicken Malai tikka    Bite-sized chicken tikka marinated with cream, cheese, royal cumin and cardamom, delicately grilled on charcoal, served with mint Dip.  A little disappointing, commented on that it was more like roast chicken
  • Chicken Dosa      Wafer thin and crispy rice flour crêpes served with spicy potato or chicken tikka as filling along with fresh coconut and tomato chutney. Extremely tasty, quite a large dish as a starter but really well flavoured.
  • Deep fried stuffed hot Chillies   Recognised as appetite stimulators by inhabitants of the tropics, if you fancy hot foods by all means give this dish a try.  Great heat, nice delay on the heat also, a sign of good spicing.

Mains

  • Chicken Bemisaal    Tikka culled from chicken supreme simmered in a smooth onion and garlic tomato puree – an evocation of cinnamon and clove. Aptly described by royal guest of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah is BEMISAAL meaning incomparable.  Described as a great dish, really well flavoured and a good balance of spicing.
  • Chicken Lababdar  Delicately spiced and laced with butter, cream and tomatoes, cooked in a cashew nut paste, chicken lababdar is sure to become one of your favourites too.  Again, another really tasty dish, although commented on as being too hot which affected the taste a little
  • Chicken Chettinad  Chettinad Chicken is a fiery curry. There’s no reason why you can’t reduce the chillies to suit your own palate though. Chettinad Chicken tastes great with parathas.  Definitely a fiery curry, but was spiced just right, so even though the heat was there it didnt overpower the flavouring
  • Karahi chicken    Exquisite Punjabi country fare of tender chicken stir-fried in an iron karahi with a spicy masala of garlic, onions and tomatoes with a tempering of crushed coriander seeds and crispy red chillies.  Delicious dish, well blended spicing although again a little hotter than seemed described

In all, 4500 miles from Delhi aim to supply, in their words, “ a place that is relaxing and comfortable, but also wanted to inject some of the hustle and bustle of everyday life of Delhi“ Not having visited Delhi, I can only say that this is a restaurant that gives a busy feel, one that both offers a sense of a buzzing city centre, and yet somewhere you can relax and enjoy what is good, good food. Really well presented, although this does come at a price being one of the dearest we have visited. Well worth a visit ,though  more suited to groups than romantic dinners i would say.     From us a decent 8 out of ten
